About Argyle

It is believed that the argyle pattern originated from the tartan of Clan Campbell (of Argyll) from western Scotland. The argyle pattern is made up of diamonds or rhombi in a diagonal chequered display. Many argyle patterns feature a 2nd pattern that sits on top for a 3-dimensional effect. Most commonly this consists of a dotted line that cuts through the diamonds in a similar pattern. The argyle pattern was very popular amongst golfers during the 1900s, for both sweaters and long socks. It has once again become very fashionable following its adoption by several high profile fashion designers.
