>> Calvin Klein Advertising
Calvin Klein has established itself as a well known brand name partly through the use of controversial and sexual advertising. The early ads in the 1980s were shot by Bruce Weber, a famous photographer who still works today with the brand. The Calvin Klein advertising campaigns are controversial but have proved very successful, making stars of their models. Mark Wahlberg, a male underwear model, shot to fame as a hip hop star (and subsequently Hollywood star) as a result of modelling Calvin Klein underwear. In the early 90s Calvin Klein was responsible for launching the career of Kate Moss who is now a global icon. In 2008, Djimon Honsou (star of Gladiator) became the face of Calvin Klein underwear for men and Eva Mendes (star of Hitch) for women
>> History of Calvin Klein
The fashion house was founded in 1968 when Calvin Klein opened a coat shop in the York Hotel in New York City. His first collection was a line of men’s and women’s coats, featured at the New York City store. In 1969 he featured on the front cover of Vogue magazine, and in the mid 70s he created a designer-jeans craze by putting his name on the back pocket for the first time. The jeans were famously advertised by Brooke Shields in 79/80 with the slogan ‘nothing comes between me and my Calvins’
In the 1980s, as the designer jeans craze reached its peak, Calvin Klein introduced a range of men’s underwear. In the 1990s the underwear was promoted via giant billboards showing pop singer ‘Marky Mark’ Mark Wahlberg. The advertising campaign was so successful that CK underpants became known as Calvins. In the early 90s he started to manufacture a more affordable line of casual clothing and accessories under the CK brand. In 1993 Calvin Klein was named ‘America’s Best Designer’ for his minimalist All-American designs, and in June 2008 Calvin Klein began sponsoring Americas Next Top Male Model. |
