Mens Gloves - leather and suede
An essential fashion accessory for the Winter months (and other cold English days), gloves will keep your hands warm allowing you to enjoy your day with confidence. A pair of leather gloves will add style to your outfit, for both casual and formal wear. Our Gloves Collection from Dents
Dents are an English manufacturer of high quality gloves, established in 1777. They take pride in using the traditional skills of the master-craftsmen, and have established themselves as a market leader in luxury leather gloves. A majority of their products feature a 3 stitch design along the knuckles to provide extra strength and form. Some gloves have a strap or band around the wrist which stops cold air entering or hot air leaving. Glove MaterialsMost gloves are made from either leather, suede or knitted wool. Leather gloves are made from a variety of different animals such as Hairsheep, Deerskin, Sheepskin, cowsuede and pigsuede. Glove LiningsThe type of lining in the glove offers different degrees of comfort and warmth. Brushed polyester lining is a good entry price point, whilst a wool and acrylic mix is a bit softer. For the ultimate in comfort, the cashmere lined gloves are the perfect choice. If you are looking for a pair of gloves that will keep you supremely warm, then lambswool is the best choice. Linings vary in thickness, although the thicker the glove the less dexterity and movement you will have. Glove Sizes and measuring your handGlove sizes are categorised by small, medium, large and extra large or the diameter of your hand (in inches). The correct way to measure your hand is to measure all the way around your hand just above the groove of your thumb.
History of GlovesThere are records showing that gloves were used as far back as the ancient Greeks, in Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’. Laertes is described as wearing gloves to avoid the brambles in his garden. There have also been references to wearing gloves among the Romans, and jeweled gloves formed part of the regalia for kings and emperors. It wasn’t until the 13th century that gloves came into popular use as a fashion accessory for ladies, made from linen and silk and reaching the elbows. During the 16th century gloves were given a huge boost by Queen Elizabeth 1st who often wore a pair that were richly jewelled and embroidered. She would take her gloves off and back on again in front of audiences to draw attention to her beautiful hands. Makers of gloves were organised into guilds. By the 13th century a Paris guild of glove makers called ‘Gantiers’ existed that made gloves out of skin and fur. Makers of knitted gloves were organised into a separate guild called ‘Bonnetiers’, who were highly skilled craftsmen that had gone through a 5 year apprenticeship. Knitted gloves were not considered as desirable by high society though. |
