Which Style of Men’s Underwear is the most Popular?
The popular choice in men’s underwear has changed over the past 20 years, driven by advertising campaigns from the designer brands such as Calvin Klein Underwear and Emporio Armani. In the 1980’s the underwear of choice was the boxer short, having been given a huge boost by the Levis commercial entitled ‘The Launderette’ starring teen pop idol Nick Kamen. In the ‘90’s, the boxer brief (or trunk) was by far the most popular type of men’s underwear. This followed Calvin Klein’s seminal advertising campaign featuring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Moss. In the millennium we have seen the resurgence of the mens brief, following advertising campaigns for Emporio Armani featuring David Beckham.
Which Men’s Underwear is the Most Comfortable?
Perhaps the most important criteria when choosing mens underwear is the comfort factor. Whilst some men prefer tight fitting underwear, others prefer loose fitting underwear and so there is no right answer. Briefs provide the most support, which some men find comfortable and is well suited to sport. On the flipside, briefs have tight elastic around the legs which can pinch and feel too restrictive. The boxer brief and trunk benefits from a body hugging fabric, but does not have tight elastic around the legs. Instead they rely on the elasticity of the fabric to provide enough support, making them more comfortable. Boxer shorts provide the most freedom but offer no support, making them particularly uncomfortable during exercise and sport. Although boxer shorts are loose, they are not made from stretchy fabric, which means that they do not allow extreme movements.
Which Men’s Underwear is the most Fashionable?
Men’s underwear has become a fashion item, driven by the sexy advertising campaigns by the likes of Calvin Klein. This has lead to more diversity and experimentation in colours and styles of underwear. The brief has long been associated with the negative term ‘Y fronts’, and is thus perceived as being unfashionable. With the recent Emporio Armani underwear ad campaign starring David Beckham, the brief has been relaunched as a fashion item. Whilst the brief looks great on an athletic or muscled physique, it can be too revealing for the more standard male physique. The boxer brief benefits from a flattering body hugging fit whilst featuring the longer leg, which better suits the average male physique. It is essential that body hugging underwear contains lycra or spandex so that the underwear doesn’t lose its shape throughout the day. The mens brief and boxer brief comes in many different styles, but the closed fly has become a popular new trend.
The boxer short hangs loosely over the body and therefore does not have the same ‘sex-appeal’ as the tight fitting briefs and boxer briefs. On the other hand, if you are very body conscious or are overweight, then the boxer short is a sensible choice.
Which Men’s Underwear is best for your Health?
There have been many rumours about the effects of men’s underwear on male fertility. Some studies suggest that tight underwear negatively affects sperm production because of the increased temperature. There has been no conclusive evidence to prove this, with many studies casting doubt on this theory. A study in the October 1998 Journal of Urology concluded that mens underwear type is unlikely to have a significant effect on male fertility. |
